Home Orthodontics
The purpose of orthodontic braces is to treat misaligned, crooked, crowded, or protruding teeth. They close gaps between teeth and ensure that the upper and lower teeth meet properly when you close your mouth. This improves your bite, allows you to eat more comfortably, and enhances your smile
Orthodontic treatment is not just for children. Many adults also experience problems with improper tooth alignment. With discreet teeth-straightening options available at Example Dental Clinic, adult orthodontic treatment has become easier than ever.
Types of braces:
Braces are usually worn at all times for the duration of the treatment. Some braces are removable, while others are fixed to the front or back of the teeth. Our dentist will discuss the available options with you and help determine which type of brace is most suitable for your needs.
Removable braces
Removable braces come with a plastic plate that has wire clips and springs attached to move specific teeth. They can move teeth only by tipping or tilting them; therefore, they are used when tooth crowding is mild.
A removable brace needs to be worn at all times, including at night and during meals. Eating with a brace may feel awkward at first, but it usually becomes easier after a few days. If you need to wear a mouthguard while playing sports, the brace can be removed.
The brace needs to be removed for cleaning. We recommend cleaning it over a sink filled with water so that, if you accidentally drop it, it is less likely to be damaged.
Fixed braces
Fixed braces can be removed only by our orthodontist because they are attached to the surface of the teeth. Fixed braces are capable of moving teeth in a very precise manner and are therefore the most commonly used type of brace.
A fixed brace consists of small brackets cemented to the teeth and joined together with a wire.
Once treatment is complete and the brace is removed, our orthodontist will clean the brackets and filling material from your teeth. Any minor wound caused by the mini-screw will be left to heal naturally.
Aligners
Aligners are removable moulds made from clear plastic. They are used when the condition is mild and most of the adult teeth need to be moved into position.
A set of two aligners (one for the upper teeth and one for the lower teeth) is worn for a couple of weeks and then replaced with a new set. This process continues until the treatment is complete and the teeth have moved into the correct position.
The main advantage of aligners is that they are almost transparent and therefore difficult to notice. They are also easier to clean than traditional braces. A disadvantage of aligners is that they may take longer to improve the position of the teeth compared to braces.
Retainers
After your orthodontic treatment is complete, there is a possibility that your teeth may move back towards their original positions. This is known as relapse. To prevent this from happening, our orthodontist may recommend retainers, which are special appliances used to keep your teeth in the correct position. The length of time retainers need to be worn varies from patient to patient, depending on individual circumstances.
Retainers are available in both removable and fixed forms, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Our orthodontist will help you choose the option that is best suited to your needs.
